Our Story

Shift Our Ways Collective began with a vacant lot in Arleta—

An open grassy yard bordered by a chain-link fence with green bushes on the left and a concrete block wall with a triangular pattern on the right. There are trees in the background and the sky is partly cloudy.

Where others saw waste, we saw possibility. In 2020, a group of women came together with a shared vision: to transform neglected spaces into places of nourishment, connection, and care. With borrowed tools, a deep sense of care, and support from our neighbors, we cleared the lot, rebuilt the compacted soil, and began the slow, steady work of regeneration—both of the land and of the community around it. Through composting, mulching, and regenerative practices, we replenished the soil with life. And from that soil, we began to grow organic, pesticide-free produce.

What started as a small act of mutual aid has grown into the SOW Collective Backyard Farms, where we now donate 100% of our harvest, four days a week, to community members who need it most.

But this is about more than food. We believe that restoring land goes hand in hand with restoring relationships—with the earth, with each other, and with ourselves.

We’ve helped install garden beds at homes and schools, donated seeds, plant starts, fruit trees, and tools, and created a neighborhood-scale food system rooted in care and reciprocity. people of all ages are invited to learn, lead, and grow with us—gaining hands-on skills in regenerative agriculture, food justice, and community care. From hands-on workshops and compost education to joyful monthly gatherings, everything we do is designed to uplift people while caring for the planet.

At S.O.W, sustainability isn’t just a practice—it’s a way of being.
We grow food, yes. But we’re also growing belonging, resilience, and a future rooted in justice and joy.
